Towards Comprehensive Planning: Global Cities in Conversation

Friday, May 21, 2021, 1-2PM

Many New Yorkers are seeking a more coordinated and collaborative approach to land use planning in the city, while others are comfortable with the status quo or feel New York is too complex for a comprehensive plan. New York City Council Speaker Johnson’s proposal for a new comprehensive planning framework outlined in Intro 2186 and the accompanying report, Planning Together: A New Comprehensive Planning Framework for New York City, comes at the end of the de Blasio administration and on the cusp of upcoming elections that will bring significant changes to every level of government.

But what is a “comprehensive plan” and how have they been implemented in other cities?

Join MAS for a free virtual conversation examining the evolution of the comprehensive plan from a planning exercise to a dynamic governance framework. This discussion will illuminate best practices for bringing communities into the process early and often, and how comprehensive plans can assist in adapting to climate change, direct growth, and prioritize investments to address longstanding disparities between people and places. Read more about our panelists below.

Decarbonising EU Cities via Hydrogen

European Green Week Partner Event - online

3 June 2021, 11:00 - 12:00

Pollution affects us through the air we breathe, the water we drink, or the soil in which we grow our food. It is a major environmental cause of multiple mental and physical illnesses and premature deaths, especially among children, people with certain medical conditions, and the elderly. This particularly concerns cities in which dense space and high numbers of cars, transportation, heating and cooling systems add to emission and pollution levels. In addition, they are site to a number of fossil fuel based temporary and transportable power gensets.

Early registration ending soon: Walk Bike Places

Since the event was founded in 1980, Walk/Bike/Places has focused on addressing the most important and challenging issues of the moment, and making the conference a place where diverse voices are heard, and leaving a positive legacy in our host city.

While the event will be offered both in person and online this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year will continue that tradition. This year’s theme is “The Route to Recovery,” and the program will give us an opportunity to explore how our streets and public spaces can act as agents of healing from the pandemic, as well as the many challenges and injustices that it magnified, like systemic inequities and our often deadly auto-oriented transportation systems.
