Inside our rapidly urbanising world

Since its founding six years ago, Guardian Cities has grown from a small experiment into a huge community. Together – as editors, writers, photographers and film-makers, along with architecture experts, urban planners, gentrification activists, cycling evangelists, canalboat dwellers, homeless people, theatre-makers, refugees and the rest of a motley crew of contributors and readers from nearly 600 cities – we have tried to shape how the world understands urbanisation: namely, as one of the truly transformative global phenomena of the 21st century.

World Urban Forum 10 | Meet ISOCARP in Abu Dhabi

From 8 to 13 February, the Tenth Session of the World Urban Forum (WUF) will take place in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Established in 2001 by the UN to address rapid urbanisation and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies and convened by UN-Habitat, the Forum is a high level, open and inclusive platform for addressing the challenges of sustainable urbanisation.

ISOCARP and ISOCARP Institute will be actively participating by co-hosting two Networking Events (more info here), presenting our Society and projects together with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology at the exhibition (Hall 7, Booth 5), and speak on behalf of the Society at various events.

Urban Innovative Actions

Led by the municipality of Turin (IT), TO-nite will design multidisciplinary solutions in partnership with local residents to tackle security problems in two neighbourhoods of the city where the population feels insecure disturbances associated with nightlife and the presence of gangs. Efus will assist Turin in ensuring that their schemes can be transferred to other Italian and European cities.

Moving Towards a Decarbonized Future of Last Mile Logistics

For many cities, last mile logistics is viewed as a "necessary evil." Delivery vehicles are responsible for inceased pollution and congestion but  ultimately, urbanites want their stuff and they want it fast. Himanshu Raj, Sustainable Mobility Officer and Tsu-Jui Cheng, Sustainable Mobility Program Manager, ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, explore real life solutions being implemented in cities around the world for efficient and cleaner last mile logistics.

Public Health and Sustainable Transport Summit

The Public Health & Sustainable Transport Summit brings together central and local government decision-makers to focus on best practice between the public health, transport planning and urban development sectors.

Prevention rather than cure is now the UK government’s public health priority, and policy makers and planners can make a significant difference to positive health outcomes through boosting the delivery of active travel and better public transport schemes.

The Cities Americans Want to Flee

According to a growing pile of headlines, hordes of Californians are fed up with their expensive coastal dystopia-state and are fleeing for cheaper, less-flammable places like Idaho, driving up housing costs, ruining the local culture, and spurring a new building boom.

Kansas City Removes Bus Fee

Kansas City, Mo., will remove the $1.50 bus fare this year to further encourage residents to use the system. But having accessible public transit is only one part of the city’s wider goal of improving quality of life.

Officials with the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) plan to phase out the system’s $1.50 fare in the coming year, in a move to remove at least one barrier standing in the way of riders choosing the transit system to get to jobs, run errands and more.

Out of Darkness, Light Rail!

In an era of austere federal funding for urban public transportation, light rail seemed to make sense. Did the little trains of the 1980s pull their own weight?

Why were trolleybuses ever scrapped?

They were the original electric buses but 50 years ago today saw the plug pulled on the last trolleybus in Wales.

Environmentally friendly and cheap, they finally succumbed to car ownership and fossil fuel on 11 January 1970.

Yet half a century later - almost to the day - local councils now see electric public transport as an answer to congestion and air pollution.

Designing cities around the needs of children

Last year, Guardian Cities reported an exclusive story: that a new housing development in London had erected a wall to prevent children in the social housing section from using the communal playground.

Within hours of the story being published, news reporters from across the UK turned up on the doorstep of the Baylis Old School development in Lambeth. All the major political parties condemned this “segregated playground”, and a few days later the developer, Henley Homes, backed down. Workers came in to tear down the wall.

New event MaaS-A-Con

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) describes a shift away from personally-owned modes of transportation and towards mobility provided as a shared service.  MaaS is quickly gaining momentum around the world, holding the promise of making personal mobility more affordable for families and the communities they live in.

MaaS disrupts and inspires traditional transportation players, private ventures and city officials at the same time.  But to ensure MaaS meets its full potential, it must be informed by a variety of views and serve multiple goals.

MaaS-A-Con brings together innovators, practitioners and advocates to experience the technologies and best-practices that can make MaaS a reality in our communities.

What self-driving cars will really do to cities

It’s 2035, and you’re going to a movie. As you walk out the door, you reach for your phone instead of the car keys because you don’t have a car. Instead, you’ve ordered your ride to come to you.

So why is urban living bad for your mental health?

Among the world’s megacities – defined as urban areas with more than 10 million inhabitants – Tokyo, Japan is the largest, with 37 million citizens. It is followed by Delhi, India (29 million) and Shanghai, China (26 million). In the UK, after several decades of rural-to-urban migration, 83 per cent of people live in urban environments – and London has become the first European megacity.

The detrimental effects of urban living on physical health have long been recognised, including higher rates of cardiovascular and respiratory disease. More recent, however, is the revelation that urban living can also have adverse effects on mental health.

Rethinking density to build cities of the future

Ready or not, cities across the globe are about to enter a realm of rapid disruption brought about by a wave of transformational technological progress.

The new informational, transactional, and operational technologies – popularly termed “Industry 4.0” – are likely to change the shape of cities, and may well require a rethinking of how we define “density.”

Smart Cities and Mobility Forum

Cities and technology in the 21st century are moving faster than the old systems of governance and analysis can follow. New ways of communicating, moving and making business are constantly arising. The future of urban life is disruptive. The challenge before companies and local government is to make sense of these changes and use them to provide a better service and better quality of life for a rising number of citizens. The “smart city” is a collective of the innovative technologies that can make urban life better. “How” is a question with multiple answers that can only be found through dialogue, insight and collaboration between city builders, businesses and most important of all - the people who live in cities.

The annual SMART CITIES AND MOBILITY FORUM is already becoming the leading platform in SEE for new urban technology and the transformation of mobility and living. Now in its 3rd year, the event is a meetup of the policy, business and citizen sectors, where you can get up to date with and explore new trends, business models and policies in urban development and mobility technology.

E-mobility in public transport - IT-TRANS 2020

One of the key factors for achieving climate protection targets is having a strong public transport system. As well as generally expanding public transport, it is of crucial importance to switch to emission-free modes of transport such as in bus fleets. In its Clean Vehicles Directive, the EU therefore requires public authorities to purchase a minimum quota of clean buses. This means that, as of 2021, at least 45 percent of buses must use alternative drives or run on natural gas or synthetic fuels. This quota will be increased to 65 percent as of 2026.

How we prevent vandalism of our $4,000 shared e-bikes

Almost everyone has seen it: Scooters lying flat on the road. Shared bicycles in the river. Vandalism and reckless behaviour are not only a logistical nightmare for many sharing providers, they also represent a huge financial burden and have already driven some shared vehicle providers to ruin. Raoul Stöckle, founder and CEO of BOND Mobility, explains how his company succeeded in preventing vandalism and therefore is on its way to profitability.

City Street4: Photo competition Streets’ Mobility Rock ‘n’ Roll

In reference to the general theme of the City Street4 Conference (CS4), the “Streets’ Mobility Rock ‘n’ Roll“ Street Photography Competition invites entries to document a street with one photograph and its caption depicting the variety of mobility modes that can be found on the streets of contemporary cities - a shot that captures the urban street occupants and their ongoing mobility habits. The author should aim to capture a scene where more than one (2 and up) mobility modes are present – showing the interwovenness of the mobility modes in everyday life of city streets. The more street occupants and their mobility modes, the better the Rock’n’Roll!

How will cities be impacted by the first wave of autonomous cars?

Imagine this scene: It’s the year 2040, and Tom’s home virtual personal assistant has summoned an autonomous car to his home in Edinburgh. He will be attending a meeting in London in a couple of hours. The autonomous car is taking him to a mobility hub, where he will board a pre-booked seat on a Hyperloop. Half an hour later he’ll arrive in London. Tom will walk the rest of the way, or he may even get into a shared shuttle to get to his ultimate destination.

Should we ban SUVs from our cities?

Some campaign groups believe regulators should force car manufacturers to produce and sell zero-emission and suitably sized vehicles.

"SUV insanity” shouted the front page of German business newspaper Handelsblatt earlier this month, showcasing a weekend special questioning the aggressive marketing by carmakers of highly profitable 4x4 vehicles.

How Ride-Hail Companies Can Help, Not Hurt, Cities

A veteran of municipal transportation regulation advises ride-hail companies on how to make cities into friends, not foes.

For ride-hailing companies, this is a time of reflection and strategic realignment. The two biggest U.S. players, Uber and Lyft, have gone public and are facing pressure to become profitable. This is looking harder when not just New York City but also Seattle and Los Angeles have recognized the full extent of the hardships faced by your drivers and are working to ensure they make a fair wage. On top of that, human drivers aren’t disappearing in favor of driverless cars as soon as some thought they would a few years ago.

'Post-Oil City: Planning for an Urban Green New Deal'

Doha, Qatar, November 8-12, 2020

With the theme ‘Post-Oil City: Planning for an Urban Green New Deal’, the 56th World Planning Congress aims to explore how cities can drive the transition from a fossil-fuel dependent to a carbon-neutral economy and adopt climate-responsive planning practices in the Gulf States and in cities globally.

Organised in collaboration with the Urban Planning Department of the Qatari Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME), the 2020 Congress will feature an exciting line-up of activities to be staged in Msheireb Downtown Doha – an area rebuilt upon a unique and ambitious regeneration project right at the heart of the capital city depicting modern trends, yet inspired by traditional Qatari heritage and architecture.

Barcelona residents opt for public transport over cars

Coming into effect on 1 January 2020, many roads in the Catalan capital will be off limits to cars, unless drivers are willing to face charges of up to €1,800 for driving in the city during the peak times of between 7am and 8pm on weekdays.

According to Barcelona’s transport authority ATM (Autoritat Metropolitana del Transport), the implementation of this low emission zone in the Catalan capital will mean that 50,000 of the city’s most polluting cars and motorbikes will now be left at home.

It's a drastic measure, and lawmakers have known for some time that the move wouldn’t sit well with commuters who were being asked to ditch their cars without any financial compensation. Taking this factor into account, Barcelona mayor Ada Colau decided in 2017 that she would offer a three-year long free travel card, known as the T-verde card, to affected drivers who delivered their cars to the scrapyard.

How the On-Demand Economy Reshaped Cities

Since 2010, a slew of on-demand companies and technologies have managed to use consumer data to transform the commercial significance of urban living.

In 1964, scientists in the Galápagos Islands fed radio transmitters wrapped in chunks of food to a bunch of giant tortoises. As the animals slept, wandered, and mated, their behaviors pinged back to the research team’s receivers in the form of radio signals.

This early use of telemetry, or the transmission of computer information over long ranges, proved that biologists could observe, make inferences about, and even influence their subjects remotely. In her 2019 tome The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, the Harvard scholar Shoshanna Zuboff writes that the tortoise experiment was also a prelude for the kind of data-collection technology that has become ubiquitous in human society. And in the 2010s, it began to transform the shape of modern cities.

The climate agenda is the agenda of our communities

On the morning of December 12, a meeting was held to share experiences of how cities are innovating from a social and economic point of view in order to accelerate climate actions.

With this idea, Federico Buyolo, Director of the Office of the High Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda, who started the meeting by emphasizing that "communities are the fundamental part of Agenda 2030, because it is an agenda of citizenship. This is why Climate Action needs to start from the sphere closest to the citizens, from the local sphere” Miquel Rodríguez Planas, Commissioner of the 2030 Agenda of the Barcelona City Council used his participation to share ideas on how the public and private sectors should act together to implement sustainable local actions.

Cultural heritage and light management in Lyon

In Lyon, urban lighting is closely embedded in the whole urban landscape and is part of the city’s heritage.

Since the early 1990s, Lyon has engaged in a deep reflection on urban lighting. The first lighting plan was released in 1989 and changed its image of a foggy and black city. Lyon’s second lighting plan (2003) overcame the traditional approach to lighting (like lighting buildings), considering the new challenges arising with new technologies such as LED lighting, and gave a larger place to human beings and human activities. The plan also engaged in a reflection on the place of light in the cultural heritage of a city. Light shows the reality of the city in its complexity and heterogeneity. Today, light is an integral part of Lyon’s cityscape and has been integrated in all urban planning projects.

Financing Air Quality Plans - Guidance for cities

Depending on the internal organisation of single Member States, regions or local authorities are responsible of the development, implementation and reporting of Air Quality Plans.

Given the localised nature of the drivers and consequences of air pollution on citizens’ health, municipal and local authorities are often best placed to implement effective measures to improve air quality, due to their knowledge of the territory, actors and policy levers (e.g. urban planning, infrastructure/traffic management, housing permits, parking policy, etc.).

Urban traffic measurements - residents can now monitor  their area

For urban mobility planners and policymakers to influence changes in mobility patterns, they need to have a detailed knowledge of the existing situation. Traditionally, gathering information about mobility patterns and in particular, vehicular traffic has required costly traffic surveys which rarely distinguish between vehicle type – and only present a short snapshot of the situation.
