5th World Forum on Local Economic Development The LED Forum is a biennial event which aims to provide a platform for exchanges and debates in order to build more inclusive and sustainable cities, and examine the role of local and regional communities to achieve this objective. Previous editions took place in Seville (2011), Foz do Iguaçu (2013) Turin (2015) and Praia (2017).The Forum constitute a platform for dialogue on key issues such as poverty eradication, employment and decent work, sustainable entrepreneurship, multi-stakeholder partnerships, including the involvement of civil society, workers’ and employers’ organizations. Led by TOPOS – Digital Aquitaine, this first congress on ITS and climate takes part of the ITS4Climate initiative launched during the 21st Conference of the Parties in 2015. COP 21 was a key milestone in the history of global climate change policy. An ambitious goal was agreed – to hold the increase of global average temperature below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, and pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1,5°C. However, three years later, the key message coming from COP 24 (December 2018, Katowice) was that global emissions have now increased to their highest level ever (2.7% global increase in 2018). Urgent actions are required globally – in the next 12 years – in order to achieve the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Google’s sister company wants to build the city of the future on Toronto’s waterfront, raising concerns over privacy and the role of government. Just one kilometer east of downtown Toronto, the largest civil engineering project in North America is reshaping the course of the Don River, a major waterway. “We’re extending the Don by about 2 kilometers,” says Cam Coleman, a communications director with the Canadian construction firm EllisDon. Once the project is complete, a canyon of caissons, drilled 40 to 80 meters into the bedrock and filled with concrete, will carry the river southward, through a largely vacant industrial area known as the Port Lands and out into Lake Ontario. If you thought the world was crowded now, just wait. According to the United Nations’ latest projections of world population growth, released in June, the planet will add another 2 billion people over the next 30 years. By 2055, the global population will be teetering on the brink of 10 billion. By 2100, we’ll be looking at 10.9 billion humans — an increase of more than 3 billion people, roughly 40% growth over present-day levels. The Environmental Benefits of Floating Cities A floating city on the water might sound like a science fiction idea, but these innovative city concepts could soon be making their way into our oceans. In April 2019, the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) discussed designing sustainable floating cities to help prepare for damage related to climate change. Alongside the Oceanix company, they unveiled a plan for a 10,000-resident floating city intended to house people whose existing communities are most susceptible to the threat of rising sea levels. According to a new study published in the Journal of the American Planning Association, very few local leaders are working to anticipate the effects of self-driving cars. And though the arrival of these vehicles en masse could still be decades away, cities have a rare window of opportunity to write policies that tackle both the unwanted effects of AVs and other big civic challenges. Green remote energy for Finnish apartment buildings The City of Tampere, partner of the European project STARDUST, will be home to a new residential area in the Ilokkaanpuisto district. The peculiarity of this area is that energy will be provided by a photovoltaic power plant located 25 km away and owned by the local residents themselves.
