Launch Urban Sustainability Exchange

The online platform use (urban sustainability exchange) is an international platform for learning and exchanging ideas about sustainable urban development. It offers a continuously expanding collection of international case studies and a global network of politicians, administrators, research academics and urban practitioners. Recently, use went online at use.metropolis.org. The platform will be presented in the Berlin City Hall (Rotes Rathaus) on 6th March 2019 as part of the network event “use.learn.share – International knowledge exchange and networking for sustainable urban development”.

The Smart City is Enabled and Sustained by Trust

Smart city initiatives are top of mind among city leaders, urban planners and technology vendors today. However, most of their mindshare and resources is directed towards technology, and not on trust.

While a smart city is powered by technology and data, it is enabled and sustained by the trust its stakeholders have with the city, its services and service providers, and with each other. When there is no trust or that trust is lost, people will not use its services, nor will they participate and contribute input and data. The value of smart city services declines as expected outcomes do not materialize and people seek better alternatives.

International Conference on Urban Health Speakers announced

The theme for the 16th International Conference on Urban Health  (ICUH 2019) is People Oriented Urbanisation: Transforming Cities for Health and Well-Being. People oriented urbanisation is about liveable, sustainable and healthy cities. People’s health and well-being in cities is very much determined by the environments in which they live, work, and interact. Better understanding of how urban environments affect people’s mental, social and physical health is critical to creating liveable and healthy cities and communities.

Go here to see a list of speakers who will present at the conference.

Climate change is everyone’s business!

Climate change is not news…we have known since the ‘80s and our governments have been discussing it for a very long time. But despite the Kyoto protocol in the ’90s and the Paris Agreement in 2015, countries have been not doing enough to protect our health and the planet’s.

As pointed out by the European Political Strategy Centre (EPSC) in a recent study - you can read a short analysis by Energy Cities - this lack of action is driving new grassroots and local initiatives trying to influence climate and energy policies. People no longer see climate change as something far away from their life and have decided it is time to take the matter into their own hands. Climate change makes the news every day, and this is not likely to change anytime soon. In this article you will find some examples of this trend.

Bridging social gaps with ecological restoration

The City of Wuhan has revitalized one of the most polluted areas of the city into an ecological space for citizens.

The abandoned Jinkou Landfill and Zhanggong Dkye were the two largest sources of pollution in the city of Wuhan. Consequently, despite the expansion of the city, its commercial, educational and public health infrastructure lagged behind the growing need of the people - a deserted garbage dump and an abandoned dyke formed a “pollution divide” which widened the ecological and economic gap.

District heating 2.0

In the EU, the main use of energy by households is for heating their homes, and is therefore highly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions

Today´s liberalised markets are focused on short-term return on capital, but energy infrastructure planning should be driven by the objective of climate protection.

District heating has proven to be a convenient and sustainable way to recover energy.

The Inequality of Urban Investments

A new study of Baltimore shows that private capital is more often spent in low-poverty places that don't need it as much.

You won’t find Baltimore’s "black butterfly" by visiting the Maryland Zoo in the city’s scenic Druid Hill Park. For that matter, you won't find it in any park in the city.

Join us on Thursday, 28th March 2019, 16.00h (UTC+3) / 14.00h (UTC+1) to find out how high-performance district goal can be achieved in Turkey. The webinar will be held in Turkish.

Energy efficiency is the predominant criterion in building indices, which, in turn, contributes to sustainable development. The need to optimize the energy behavior of buildings’ has been enforced by scientific and government policies. The public debates are focused on the quality of the urban environment, as more energy efficient buildings could reduce the quantities of fossil fuels consumed and thereby reduce the amount of carbon dioxide and Sulphur dioxide emitted into the atmosphere, particularly on a micro- and mesoscale.

Building great places to grow older

Greater Manchester is UK's first age-friendly city region and wants to share its example with the world

In the metropolitan area of Greater Manchester, 1.2 million people are already aged over 50 years old. Just in a couple of decades, older people in the city-region are expected to represent about half of the entire population. Instead of facing longevity as a burden, the city-region has developed a strategy to build a society where everyone enjoys a good later life, catering to older people’s needs as it keeps different generations active and connected.

Future Cities: What You Need To Know

The rate at which we consume and expend resources right now is far from efficient. Certainly, there are many areas where we can be greener, more efficient and sustainable.

Estimates show that two thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities by 2050; that’s 6.3 billion people or 68 percent in quarter of a century’s time. Factor in urbanization which is estimated to be 1.3 million people per day right now which is expected to balloon to unprecedented levels and we’ve really got an alarming rate of population inflation in our hands.

ECOMM 2019 in Edinburgh - CANCELLED!

As already pre-announced in December 2018, we regret to confirm that due to the latest Brexit developments and the uncertainty deriving from it, the ECOMM 2019 was finally cancelled by the local organisers in Edinburgh.

Due to the very short handling time, we could not find an alternative venue and ensure a high-quality conference in 2019. Thus, we decided to focus on ECOMM 2020, that will take place in Cascais/Portugal. We very much appreciate the Portuguese invitation, as after so many ECOMMs in Northern European countries it is time to visit the South of Europe again.

IMPACT>MOBILITY Speakers Announcement

On June 24-25th the City of Amsterdam are hosting IMPACT>MOBILITY, a brand-new type of conference connecting Europe’s leading decision makers across cities, automakers, public transport authorities, mobility service platforms and investors to create partnerships and financial models for the new smart mobility landscape (https://events.impactconf.com/cities/

European cities are undergoing a revolution in urban mobility. The mass outlawing of ICE vehicles in a collective objective to meet ambitious zero-emission targets has presented opportunities for a new-breed of mobility services providers, each of whom are battling to satisfy the needs of the on-demand customer.

Backed by billions of dollars in investment, we are on the cusp of a lucrative mobility marketplace where data is king. Yet, despite the hype, the investment and the landscape changing potential, there is a very real and uneasy truth; a fully defined ecosystem and commercial strategy between public and private parties has yet to emerge.

The key to safe streets: 5 cities humanizing street design

The recent WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety revealed shocking numbers behind the global epidemic of road deaths — up to 1.35 million in 2016. Its release confirmed that vulnerable users like pedestrians and cyclists make up more than 26% of global road deaths, and that low-income neighborhoods are among the hardest hit by this crisis.

Even as this public health emergency continues to unfold, we design our streets to be wider, straighter, and faster, erasing our everyday experience at street level. Level of service is prioritized as the metric of success for our streets, and as a result, we lose sight of the human connection to these vital public spaces. In focusing on the flow of traffic, it is easy to forget that our streets are where everyday life happens and our streets are dehumanized. As a result of this thinking, progress on road safety is flagging in developing countries, as well as southern states of the U.S., where road deaths continue to mount, year after year.

The Case for Innovative Climate Finance

To state the obvious: we are living in polarized times.

The conversations around whether climate change is real, caused by humans, and how best to tackle it are as polarized in the United States as topics like tax cuts, abortion, and healthcare. I cannot profess to understand all the causes that led to climate change becoming a political conversation shrouded in theology in which people “believe” or “do not believe” whether the greenhouse effect exists, rather than its rightful place in being a scientific conversation. I will admit that I am in the camp that believes the 98%+ of peer-reviewed scientists who say that two hundred years of unchecked spewing of anthropogenic carbon has resulted in incomprehensible changes to our climate that cannot be explained by non-human ‘natural’ cycles. Many of my friends and colleagues are in the same camp.

How Urban Agriculture Can Improve Food Security

During the partial federal shutdown in December 2018 and January 2019, news reports showed furloughed government workers standing in line for donated meals. These images were reminders that for an estimated one out of eight Americans, food insecurity is a near-term risk.

In California, where I teach, 80 percent of the population lives in cities. Feeding the cities of the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area, with a total population of some 7 million, involves importing 2.5 to 3 million tons of food per day over an average distance of 500 to 1,000 miles.

How technological progress can cause urban fragility

The information age has transformed society in the last three decades thanks to the rapid adoption of innovative technology. While the economy in aggregate has benefited from this technological and social change, its unintended consequences have made cities more fragile. Much like cracks making a windshield more fragile, urban fragility comes about when government and individuals fracture or break social compacts. When individuals or governments ignore social compacts, it weakens society and makes cities more prone to failure when natural (or manmade) disasters inevitably strike. The examples of the municipal broadband program Wireless Philadelphia and homelessness in San Francisco both illustrate how cities can become fragile when these compacts are ignored.

Forum on Future Cities: Urban Intelligence

As AI (Artificial Intelligence) becomes ubiquitous, it transforms many aspects of the environment we live in. In cities, AI is opening up a new era of an endlessly reconfigurable environment. Empowered by robust computers and elegant algorithms that can handle massive data sets, cities can make more informed decisions and create feedback loops between humans and the urban environment. It is what we call the raise of UI (urban intelligence).

Key ingredients for a smart urban district

Smart city expert Ali Vasallo Belver shares the lesson learnt from an innovative integrated retrofitting strategy across Europe

As awareness grows about the need to live more sustainably, policy action towards "greening" our towns and cities is also more intense. Buildings for example consume up to 40% of all the energy used in the EU, so a lot is at stake. However, energy efficiency measures need to be integrated into "the bigger picture" of the urban environment, which includes ICT, mobility, citizen engagement and governance.

Smart Mobility Dashboard ManyWays launches in Brussels

ManyWays, a smart mobility platform, launched in Brussels in February. The dashboard displays real-time mobility data sourced from numerous technical platforms in an interactive map.

ManyWays is a Smart Mobility Belgium project that fetches mobility data from numerous technical platforms. The data streams are boiled, blended, aggregated, mixed, molded and displayed in an interactive map and a real-time dashboard. Mobility information is brought to life, showing the many ways to move around a city.

"Open mobility data is a much frequented buzz word, but with this dashboard we succeed for the first time in visualizing information in a clear and accessible way. Air quality measurements, the number of cyclists, cars and trains, .. all can be observed, in real-time. Through the dashboard, citizens are informed on mobility in Brussels and experts can correlate data, like the relationship between air quality and car traffic", said Pascal Smet, Brussels minister of Mobility and Public Works.
