REAL CORP 2020 goes VIRTUAL in September

Space restrictions in lecture halls and access restrictions at RWTH Aachen do not allow a meaningful meeting of conference participants there.
Travel warnings and limited international connections do not allow many participants to travel.
Many institutions still do not allow business trips to conferences abroad.
From this point of view, the virtualisation of REAL CORP 2020 is the only feasible way to offer you as much as possible of the originally planned conference.
The conference will take place as originally planned from 15 to 18 September 2020.

In Covid-19 Recovery, London Bets Big on Low Traffic

To curb cars and boost biking and walking, the city is rolling out low-traffic neighborhoods, with streets closed to non-local drivers. Not everyone is a fan.
Sarah Berry didn’t learn how to ride a bike until last year, when she was 27. For her, London didn’t feel like a safe place to ride. Except for one day each year — on Car-Free Day, when her block in Brixton closed to through-traffic and made room for a huge block party. “A neighbor asked, ‘Why do we only get this one day a year?’” she says. “It’s clearly the best day.”

What does the next 7-year EU budget mean for cities?

The European Commission has put its cards on the table, and this week national leaders agreed to the biggest ever EU budget proposal, to support recovery in Europe.
While the European Parliament now has to have its say, for the budget to enter into force on 1 January 2021, there are already many takeaways for cities to take note of.
The overall amount of the EU Budget will be €1,074bn which, while slightly less than previously, now sits alongside an additional €750bn in the form of the EU’s new recovery fund, making this budget the biggest ever.

ECCENTRIC online seminar: clean and efficient urban freight

We live in the world where goods and services have become more available than ever.
Yet across Europe and the world, achieving low- and zero-emission urban goods delivery has remained difficult.
However, new clean freight vehicles and fuel technologies, innovative business models and efficient supply chains could be the drivers for achieving more sustainable goods distribution at the local level.
This webinar will introduce work conducted as part of CIVITAS ECCENTRIC for fostering clean and efficient urban logistics, with Stockholm (Sweden) and Madrid (Spain) set to present their innovative solutions.
Stockholm will discuss its night-time deliveries using silent vehicles and Madrid will reveal its fully electric municipal delivery truck and the scheme that sits behind it.

When It’s One Disaster on Top of Another

While the pandemic continues to rage, hurricane season is looming. Emergency managers need to be ready not only for threats to life and property but also for new and complex financial challenges.
For state and local government's emergency managers, it has all the makings of the perfect storm: Just as they continue to face unprecedented challenges in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, hurricane season has begun. And the challenges will be fiscal as well as to life and property: Stimulus measures, while providing a badly needed influx of funds from multiple federal sources, have formed an uncertain regulatory environment and created increased risk of fraud, waste and abuse.

ITS and Bicycle: Corona-proof Cycling

As a result of the Corona crisis, The Netherlands are now living in a 1.5-metre society. Now that an increasing number of activities outside the home are allowed to take place, individual mobility will slowly increase again. In the immediate future, this will mainly be done by car and bicycle, as the capacity of public transport remains limited for the time being. At the same time, more activities are making a greater claim of public space.

5th International Conference on Smart Data and Smart Cities Online

A smart city can be defined as a city overlaid by a digital skin, which is used not only for storing city information but overall for its governance. The 5th International Conference on Smart Data and Smart Cities will present novel research concerning the use of information and communication technologies in Smart Cities, and will also provide a forum for senior researchers, students, developers, practitioners and citizens to establish collaborations on new research projects in this domain. A smart city cannot be defined without a better involvement and connection of its citizens (smart people).
The 5th International Conference will be held virtually in Nice, France as a collaboration among the Urban Data Management Society (UDMS), the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS), the Mediterranean Institute for Risk, Environment and Sustainable Development (IMREDD) of Université Côte d’Azur and the UMR 7300 ESPACE Laboratory of Geography and Urban Planing at the French National Centre for Scientific Research

How to Design a Post-Pandemic City

Architects and public health experts in Baltimore have released a guidebook of 10 concepts that reimagine urban living for an era defined by social distancing.
The coronavirus recovery in America’s cities is going to require more than just al fresco dining. As the current resurgence of Covid-19 in several states shows, there’s a broad need to reimagine public space and devise socially distanced ways to navigate the urban landscape over a longer term. In the pandemic’s early days, scores of cities closed streets to vehicle traffic to make room for pedestrians and allow restaurants to claim more sidewalk space. Now that the perils of reopening indoor activities are becoming tragically clear, outdoor space will need to work even harder — hosting stores, performances, and all manner of public services.

Urban commons and empowered cities

This time we take a look at the democratic potential of the urban commons. The commons are those resources we all share and use like water, energy, food or public space. I’ve talked to someone who deals with this in her everyday work: I’ve interviewed Nathalie de Loon who is the commons coordinator at the city council of Amsterdam.
This Spring, Amsterdam made the news as the city council officially adopted the famous “doughnut model” by Kate Rayworth. Amsterdam is the first city in the world to make such a commitment. Nathalie tells us what the doughnut means for people in Amsterdam and for energy democracy in particular. Her job mission focuses very much on stimulating the “do democracy”. Nathalie gives insights into her work around the commons and takes us to a few heat and solar cooperatives of her city.

Greening our cities with district energy!

Online final event of the HeatNet NWE project, with the participation of the EU-funded projects D2Grids, LIFE4HeatRecovery, Hotmaps, REWARDHeat, COOL DHandTempo
Today’s most advanced 4th and 5th generation district heating and cooling (DHC) systems run at low temperature, allowing less heat loss through pipes, and the use of local heat sources. This means less CO2emissions and the development of greener local economy. Despite these advantages, the use of district energy remains low across European countries, especially in the North-West area. However, cities in collaboration with citizens, policy makers and companies can meet the challenge and overcome the policy and organizational barriers to the rolloutof this innovative technology.

Designing a mobility strategy for energy

What’s the first thing you do when developing a mobility plan for a city? You look at a map. Lots of maps, ideally. You look at the departure points, destination points, flows, bottlenecks, projections for the future and try to come up with a way to smooth everything out as much as possible, as quickly as possible and for as little investment as possible.
The same is true for energy – in this case – heating and cooling.
When we talk about ‘How to design smart sector integration’ what we are really trying to do is come up with a mobility plan for energy.

2030 Retrospective on Urban Mobility After COVID-19

COVID-19 is a radical moment in so many ways. By disrupting urban systems so profoundly, it has thrust the question of urban futures before us in a way that we cannot ignore. Will cities recover? What will they look like? Will they be more inclusive? Will private cars reduce or expand their dominance over public streets and spaces?
History is being made and many paradigms are being challenged. What path we will take from here is less clear.
This is a vision of how mobility might change in developing cities. It is only a dream now – and certainly it will not be a reality everywhere – but let us imagine what thinking back to this moment in 2030 could be like.

How cities are seizing the moment to focus on climate and equity

Around the globe, in spheres of government, business, and civil society, a burgeoning consensus affirms that societal recovery from impacts of the coronavirus must occur in ways that are pro-environment and pro-equity.
A newly released report from the C40 Cities network aims to point out specific examples of this kind of recovery taking place, encouraging mayors to learn from each other as they implement policies that address residents’ short- and long-term needs while the pandemic continues. The group says solutions are available that also address two of humanity’s older, but no less urgent, crises: those of climate change, and of people’s inequitable access to the resources needed for a decent standard of life. Cities are a natural place to focus efforts, because they are home to more than half the world’s population, 90% of reported coronavirus cases, and “are where the future happens first,” according to the report.

The Case for Higher Ground

Denial is not a resilience strategy. But when it comes to managing change — and especially climate change — we’re more likely to stick our heads in the proverbial sand, maintaining and protecting the status quo, than acknowledging and planning for the inevitable rising tides. That, too, needs to change. Along with carbon mitigation plans and investments in adaptation, cities must also address the fact that attempting to preserve their urban fabric as-is may inherently lead to increased risk over time and the possibility of catastrophic loss in the future. What if these communities begin a shift toward higher ground instead?

Webinar: Greening our cities with district energy

This webinar will take place from 09:00 until 12:15.
It will be organised by HeatNet NWE.
Decarbonisation of the heating and cooling sector is a major challenge to reach carbon neutrality in a near future. One solution is to provide renewable and low carbon heat thanks to district energy. Today’s most advanced 4th and 5th generation district heating and cooling (DHC) systems run at low temperature, allowing less heat loss through pipes, and the use of local heat sources. This means less CO2 emissions and the development of greener local economy.

Europeans want to keep their cities car-free

People across Europe have been getting used to cleaner air and they want it to stay this way.
YouGov recently conducted a survey about air pollution in 21 cities across 6 European countries: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the U.K. and Belgium. Of the 7,545 respondents, 64% agreed that they do not want to go back to pre-pandemic air pollution levels, although this did vary significantly by country with 78% of Italian respondents agreeing whilst only 52% of German respondents agreed to the statement. This could be due to the effectiveness of quarantine measures that were implemented in Germany.

The Route to Infrastructure that Benefits Communities

States and localities will need the full range of tools to recover economically. That calls for federal policies that tap infrastructure-building's power to boost local jobs and small-business growth.
As coronavirus infection rates continue to spike across the country, we are still struggling to grasp the impact that COVID-19 will have on all facets of our economy. Exactly what kinds of federal help local governments and states will need most when work starts up again is hard to forecast. Stimulus spending will be essential, and whatever the mix of recovery programs, it's critical that infrastructure — with its high job-creation rates, competitive wages and opportunities for workers with less formal education — play a major role.

Pandemic Travel Patterns Hint at Our Urban Future

A snapshot of global transportation data during six months of coronavirus reveals diverging paths for cities.
From skies to streets to subways, the coronavirus pandemic has brought dramatic and unequal changes to the ways that global societies move. Travel demand plummeted as stay-at-home orders and economic shutdowns swept the world, creating conditions that varied by geography, job status, income, race, and other factors.
These patterns reveal the deep socioeconomic inequalities built into the world’s cities, which have profoundly affected the pandemic’s uneven death toll to date. Now travel is bouncing back, even as coronavirus continues to claim lives and with further outbreaks likely to come. The lessons of the great transportation freeze of 2020 could guide future policies as many cities reopen and attempt to build a healthier future.

Vienna launches a network of 'Cool Streets'

Over the past several months, Austria has recorded its highest unemployment rate since World War II, thanks to the economic aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. With no job or a suddenly smaller income – not to mention the continued threat of the virus – many Viennese will opt for a staycation this summer.
At the same time, last year, Austria’s capital experienced 39 days with temperatures of over 30°C (86°F), one of its hottest summers in history according to the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics.
Climate experts expect a similarly sizzling 2020 season, and city officials are now doubling down on efforts to combat the heat by launching a “Cool Streets” initiative as well as a new, state-of-the-art cooling park.

Green Cities Conference on-line only

It was hard decision for us. The best way to share knowledge and experiences is to directly meet each other and to spend good time talking. Also it’s important to establish new contacts and relationship. However, considering the present situation and some messages, which we received, we decided that on-line conference will be the best option for now. We strongly believe that next, 5th Green Cities Conference in 2022, will be organized like in the past.
Due to that this year Conference is free of charge, we will not cover any publication costs in journals. The costs will be covered by authors according to journals’ rules and expectations.

Rethinking City Branding in times of the Covid19

In this global emergency environment, the management of the image and reputation of cities is a key factor for economic and social recovery, guided by a new model of safer, healthier, more environmentally sustainable and more socially just economic development.
For this reason, the Barcelona City Council and UPF Barcelona School of Management are organising the webinar 'Rethinking City Branding in times of the Covid19, roadmaps to social and economic recovery' on Tuesday 21 July 2020 from 9:30 to 13:50 CEST.

Will COVID-19 usher in a new culture of outdoor living and dining?

Cities around the globe are allowing restaurants and cafes to expand into public spaces to enable safe dining after COVID-19 lockdown.
It could usher in a new era of socializing outdoors.
Streets are also being widened and given over to cyclists, which could also mean greener, cleaner city centres.
The Lithuanian capital of Vilnius has become the poster child for how cities can embrace outdoor living and socializing as they come out of COVID-19 lockdown.

Testing the Resilient City

New edition of Thinking Cities puts spotlight on COVID
It was once said that a crisis should never be wasted. The COVID-19 pandemic has been the biggest humanitarian crisis that the vast majority of us have ever encountered, and while several nations are still in its grip, others are starting to ease their way out of lockdown and attempting to regain at least some semblance of normality. But for urban mobility, creating a new normality is one of the most pressing issues facing cities and regions across the world.

The Bicycle as a Vehicle of Protest

A week ago, on Wednesday night, the third night of a citywide curfew in New York, police officers were seen confiscating bicycles. Posts on social media described N.Y.P.D. officers violently seizing bikes from peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstrators, who were continuing to march in defiance of the 8 p.m.. lockdown. In one widely shared video clip, a jittery camera captured a cop wheeling an apparently commandeered bike; a woman can be heard screaming at police, asking why bikes are being taken, and how protesters are supposed to travel home. Another piece of viral footage, retweeted by Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, among others, shows three policemen clubbing a cyclist with batons on a Manhattan street. It’s unclear whether the man was arrested, or what became of his bicycle.

Masks and AI: the new mobility reality

French authorities are using artificial intelligence to track face covering compliance In common with other countries, the French government has declared face masks as essential, and has made wearing them compulsory on public transport and in secondary schools. This mandate came on the heels of France opening up the economy after a lockdown that, according to French prime minister Edouard Philippe, likely saved more than 60,000 lives.

Recognizing the changed circumstances in which much of the world finds itself, the CTBUH Conference scheduled to take place in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur this October has been put back one year, thus rescheduled for fall 2021.
Instead, on 17 November 2020, the Council will convene a global event on the theme of The Post-Crisis City: Rethinking Sustainable Vertical Urbanism. Across three global cities—Singapore, London, and Chicago—and streaming worldwide online, over the course of 24 hours, the Conference will bring the most inspiring thoughts and profound visions to attendees. Join us online or in one of the three local physical gatherings (COVID-19 guidelines allowing), and discover how cities can be more responsive and anticipatory, and less reactionary, in the face of what is certain to be even more rapid change and disruption than we have recently experienced.

Cities Ponder Policy Changes to Reduce Traffic

A new examination of 100 U.S. metros during the nationwide stay-at-home orders shows that small changes to societal norms, like daily commutes, could have significant impacts for air quality.

3 Ways U.S. Cities Are Investing in Clean Energy for Resilience

By 2030, more than 145 million people across the world will be impacted by flooding each year – many of whom live in coastal areas of the United States. Wildfires are growing rapidly in areas of the U.S. where they once were rare, burning more than twice as much land area per year from 2000-2018 than in the previous 15 years. The outbreak of disease, as evidenced by the current COVID-19 pandemic, is placing newfound shocks and stresses on U.S. cities. As unforeseen and dramatic events like these become more common, cities must increase their abilities to endure and respond to conditions that can turn communities upside down.

56th ISOCARP World Planning Congress

'Post-Oil City: Planning for an Urban Green Deal'
Doha, Qatar, November 8-12, 2020
Looking at the calendar of similar planning events, we would not be alone with our initial common goal of organising the 56th World Planning Congress as planned.
However, we remain vigilant and aware of our responsibilities and are actively working with our local partner to monitor the situation closely and ensure that appropriate precautions are planned to protect the health of our participants and
that all necessary contingency plans are prepared and can be put in place if the situation after the summer holidays so requires.

Covid-19: a springboard for more food solidarity?

Cities have shown how agile they can be in addressing increased needs of their local population in terms of access to (healthy) food. As the economic crisis unfolds and hits the most vulnerable first, it is important to think about what cities can do to sustain and transfer such good practices and what support they need at national and European levels.

Uppsala Climate Protocol – an inclusive approach to climate neutrality

In the Covenant City of Uppsala, local government is working with public and private organisations to design climate goals and the way to reach them together. The Climate Protocol is an inclusive co-design model that has resulted in a concrete climate strategy.
The Climate Protocol is a group of organisations (private companies, universities, public authorities and civil associations) working with the local government to tackle climate change. It was launched in 2010, with 16 organisations signing up to contribute to the city’s goal of a 30% reduction in emissions by 2020. After 10 successful years of engagement, the membership and the goals have adjusted: the partnership now has 40 member organisations, and the city has updated its ambitions to achieve a fossil free and renewable Uppsala by 2030 and a climate positive Uppsala by 2050.
