Urban Future Global Conference - cancelled We are heartbroken. UFGC20 is cancelled. In the light of the global Covid-19 outbreak we couldn’t have guaranteed the health and safety of our attendees, speakers, exhibitors and staff at this year’s URBAN FUTURE global conference, scheduled to take place in Lisbon on April 1-3 Energy Cities 2020 postponed to 15 September Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, together with the city of Heerlen we decided to postpone our Forum to a later date. The first Cities & Citizens Energy Forum will take place from the 15th to the 17th September 2020. https://forum.energy-cities.eu/ Cities invited to join new Intelligent Cities Challenge Cities will play a key role in the transition to a sustainable future. Whilst cities are one of the leading sources of carbon emissions and other environmental issues, they are crucially also taking a lead on finding solutions to these problems. Now a new support programme is aiming to help European cities make the transition to a greener, more social and smarter future. The European Commission's Intelligent Cities Challenge (ICC) will provide support, guidance and advice to 100 cities across the EU to seize the opportunities of transitioning to green, smart, sustainable growth. This follows on from the success of the Digital Cities Challenge, which helped 41 cities across the EU capitalise on the growing potential of digital tools to make urban spaces more enjoyable for everyone. https://www.polisnetwork.eu/news/cities-invited-to-join-new-intelligent-cities-challenge/ Share your ideas on how we can all take action for a carbon-neutral Europe There’s no doubt about it: we all have our part to play in the fight against climate change. Through the European Climate Pact, the EU Commission is seeking to better involve citizens and communities in this global effort. The Commission wants to know how to better engage everyone - including individual citizens, local governments and associations - on climate change. CEMR is currently preparing a joint response to this consultation, to which member associations will be invited to contribute. https://www.ccre.org/en/actualites/view/3991 World Towns Leadership Summit - cancelled Concerns over the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) continues worldwide, with both public sector and private sector leaders imposing official or voluntary travel bans. In recent weeks, as the situation has evolved, we remained committed to carrying forward with hosting the World Towns Leadership Summit (WTLS) in Cape Town, South Africa. Sadly, IDA and our Cape Town host partner have decided we must cancel the 2020 WTLS. We will be refunding all registration fees directly. https://downtown.org/event/2020-world-town-leadership-summit/ Smart Cities Connect postponed to 17 November In light of these concerns, we have made the difficult decision to change the date and venue of the Smart Cities Connect Spring Conference & Expo and the US Ignite Application Summit set for April 6-9 in Denver to coincide with the Smart Cities Connect Fall Conference & Expo scheduled for November 17-19, 2020. These events will now be held simultaneously in National Harbor, Maryland. While we regret the inconvenience this change may cause for some of you, we are excited for the opportunities to connect that this first-of-its-kind joint gathering will bring. https://spring.smartcitiesconnect.org/ Are Suburbs Safer From Coronavirus? Probably Not. Urban density does play a role in disease transmission. But rural areas and suburban sprawl aren’t necessarily safer spaces to ride out the Covid-19 crisis. What Benefits can Cities Expect From Fare-Free Transport? In early December 2019, members of the city council in Kansas City, Missouri unanimously approved a resolution which will see it become the first major US metropolis to introduce free public transport later this year. It is a brave move in a region where 92 percent of people use cars for transit and it will cost around US$8 million–the amount the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) receives from bus fares annually–but supporters of the plan believe that making public transport free will translate into wider benefits. https://www.urbangateway.org/news/what-benefits-can-cities-expect-fare-free-transport 50th UAA Conference - cancelled Given the establishment of travel restrictions by universities and local/state/national governments, and out of great concern for the health and safety of all registered persons, the 2020 UAA Conference, scheduled for April 2-4, is cancelled. This decision is based on a careful analysis and recommendation of the Executive Office, followed by thorough discussion and a unanimous vote of the UAA Governing Board. https://urbanaffairsassociation.org/conference/ REAL CORP 2020 postponed to 15 September As you might have expected during the last couple of days, it has now become fact that due to the current situation all over the world REAL CORP 2020 has to be postponed. Three Es of Smart Infrastructure for Smart Cities To build citizen-centric smart cities, one needs smart infrastructure in place to ensure an intelligent, connected ecosystem In popular culture, smart cities are often perceived as unrecognizable cities with sky touching buildings and air cars navigating on virtual roads. In reality, a smart city is one that uses technology to improve and transform the lives of its citizens, while minimizing the digital divide and encouraging businesses to innovate. https://www.dqindia.com/three-es-smart-infrastructure-smart-cities/ City-run ‘hackathons’: worth the hype? Cities are turning to hackathon-style events to spark new business, generate policy ideas, and co-create innovative urban solutions. But do they really work? We put the question to urban innovation experts and municipal staff in five URBACT cities… and came up with the answer: “Yes, if you include the right people, adapt the format to your needs, and provide follow-up support to winning ideas.” https://urbact.eu/city-run-%E2%80%98hackathons%E2%80%99-worth-hype TRA Conference 2020 - cancelled Finnish Government has on 12 March issued a policy statement, that all larger seminars and events organized by the State will be cancelled until the end of May 2020. The competent authorities, Regional State Administrative Agencies, have prohibited all public events of over 500 persons for a period of one month. Traficom foresees that the prohibition will be extended to cover the dates of this event. For this reason we are compelled to announce that the TRA2020 event is cancelled. Unfortunately we must inform you that as a result of a careful evaluation of the health situation caused by Sars-CoV-2 ("Coronavirus"), the City of Innsbruck together with the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) have decided with great regret to cancel the CEMR2020. A postponement of the congress to an alternative date is currently being examined. You will in this case be informed accordingly. https://www.cemr2020.at/en/information/index/1-0.html Luxembourg is the first country with free public transport Most people using public transport anywhere in Luxembourg, no longer need to pay. Luxembourg's plans to provide free public transport entered into force from the beginning of March 2020. On 29 February, the country stopped charging standard fares for travel on its trains, trams and buses. Beforehand, people needed to pay about €400 for an annual ticket; today they can travel for free. However, those wanting to travel first class still need to pay €660 for an annual ticket. https://www.eltis.org/in-brief/news/luxembourg-first-country-free-public-transport The real estate industry is quickly changing as property technology (proptech) becomes more pervasive. Digital Transformation is a journey in which most Local Governments are engaged by taking their own approach routes step by step. But all routes should lead to the composition of a Mosaic in which each single tile will be part of a coherent assembly and will create the desired overall design of Digital Transformation. The conference will lead you through some of the key elements of the Mosaic and open the debate on the opportunities and challenges. https://www.majorcities.eu/2020-larissa/ CityLaunch Smart City Conference This year’s theme is “Transportation for the Smart City” offering three conference tracks: Mobility as a Service (MAAS); the first ever Smart Mobility Certification for Traffic Engineers; and Data/Open Data – including cyber security and more. Renaturing cities: good for health and the economy Nature has historically been a ‘blind spot’ for urban planners. Spatial analyst Thami Croeser reveals how many cities are bringing it back into their spaces, with innovative nature-based solutions to tackle the effects of climate change and air pollution https://www.urbangreenup.eu/news--events/news/renaturing-cities-good-for-health-and-the-economy.kl Smart solutions for over-touristed cities Ostend is known as the “queen of the Belgian seaside resorts”: its beach, fishing harbour and old town draw thousands of visitors every year. “We are a small city but, being on the coast, we triple our population (around 70,000 residents) in the summertime. So, we have problems typical of bigger towns,” says Astrid Vanackere, smart city coordinator at the Municipality. In particular, Ostend will look closely at the solutions adopted by tourist cities such as Valencia in Spain, Dresden in Germany and Antalya in Turkey, which are the ‘lighthouses’ of the EU smart city project MAtchUP. Vanackere says: “As ‘a follower city’ will see how they handle issues such as sustainable mobility and deal with information and communications technology (ICT). In this way, we want to upscale our own ideas and strategies.” https://www.matchup-project.eu/news/smart-solutions-for-over-touristed-cities/ ICSW 2020 solid waste conference is CANCELLED For the past several days we have been watching the situation regarding the COVID -19 virus and travel concerns. After much deliberation, we have decided that the appropriate course of action is to cancel the conference this year. While much is unknown, our opinion is that it is best not to bring together people from many different places at this time. https://solid-waste.org/2020-agenda/ What’s your Smart City Expo Atlanta track? Join leading government officials, mayors, CEOs, CTOs, CIOs, venture capitalists, and innovators for thought-provoking discussions at Smart City Expo Atlanta, taking place June 10-11, 2020 at the Georgia World Congress Center! https://smartcityexpoatlanta.com/ How reducing inequality will make our cities safer Urban violence is predictable; it concentrates in specific places, among certain people and at very particular times. This means violence is hyperlocal, concentrated in "hot spot" neighbourhoods and blocks. Inequality, whether in terms of income, wealth or welfare and endowments, is a strong determinant of everything from social cohesion and social mobility to life expectancy. A reduction of inequality and concentrated disadvantage in violent cities and neighbourhoods is, therefore, one of the most powerful ways to reduce violence. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/03/what-are-the-causes-of-urban-violence-inequality/ Cities engaging in the right to housing Throughout 2020, UIA and URBACT will be exploring how cities can design housing policies and practical solutions to implement the right to housing, together with Antwerp (BE), Athens (EL), Barcelona (ES), Brussels Capital Region (BE), Budapest (HU), Chemnitz (DE), Ghent (BE), Lyon Metropole (FR), Mataró (ES), Nantes (FR) and Thessaloniki (EL). https://urbact.eu/cities-engaging-right-housing European EV Charging Summit 2020 Venue Announced We are very pleased to announce Novotel Rotterdam Brainpark as the venue for our European EV Charging Summit taking place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on the 27th & 28th May 2020 https://www.wplgroup.com/aci/event/evcharging-summit/ How to design strategies tailor-made to local needs From migration to climate change, towns and regions face a growing array of challenges in which local and global issues are intertwined. But how can local governments create development strategies in an integrated, inclusive and participatory way? Join us at our masterclass session on “Designing strategies tailor-made for local needs” at the CEMR Congress in Innsbruck (Austria), on Thursday 7 May at 9:30, to find out. https://www.ccre.org/en/actualites/view/3983 Pandemics Are Also an Urban Planning Problem Will COVID-19 change how cities are designed? Michele Acuto of the Connected Cities Lab talks about density, urbanization and pandemic preparation. Disease shapes cities. Some of the most iconic developments in urban planning and management, such as London’s Metropolitan Board of Works and mid-19th century sanitation systems, developed in response to public health crises such as cholera outbreaks. Now COVID-19 is joining a long list of infectious diseases, like the Spanish flu of 1918 in New York and Mexico City or the Ebola Virus Disease in West Africa in 2014, likely to leave enduring marks on urban spaces. Toolkit for climate-smart urbanization The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat, and the Commonwealth Secretariat, in collaboration with several United Nations entities, have developed a law and climate change toolkit to promote climate-smart urbanization. Take part in Efus' 2020 General Assembly The European Forum for Urban Security's 2020 General Assembly will be held on 26-27 March in Riga (LV). Uber and Lyft have consumed a vast amount of attention since they arrived a decade ago. But in many ways, we’re just beginning to understand what ride-hailing is doing. A growing cache of research by academics and policymakers points to a host of negative impacts associated with the explosive popularity of on-demand rides, including increased traffic congestion, declines in public transit ridership and upticks in traffic fatalities. EC announces sustainable mobility award nominees The finalists of the EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK Awards, the Award for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning (SUMP Award) and the first EU Urban Road Safety Award were revealed today. Mérida’s officials know that these trees provide benefits to the residents, but until recently they didn’t know how much these benefits were worth or how they were distributed across the city. That made it difficult for the officials to know where to focus their limited budget and tough for them to advocate for more resources. Cultural heritage in Action: join our community of practice!
