The Master programme provides a unique opportunity for professionals and bachelor graduates to invest in their future. It will enable you to become an innovative urban manager, a leader who analyses and develops cities based on a thorough understanding of urban theory and practice.
Who is it for?
The programme is designed for persons with at least a bachelor’s degree and professional experience in urban management and development. Bachelor graduates in related fields of study without working experience may be accepted. The entire programme is taught in English and fluency in the English language is required.
Course Introduction
The programme will enable you to understand the underlying causes of informal occupation of land and slum formation, to acquire knowledge and skills to develop upgrading strategies to improve slums, and to formulate policies that create options to prevent new slum formation.
The programme is intensive in nature and innovative, demanding a proactive attitude from participants. They are engaged in a number of specially designed learning environments that comprise lectures, practical exercises, case study analysis, role-playing games, video films discussions and controversial policy debates. The course draws from lessons learned through international experience and stimulates creative thinking as participants are exposed to contexts from a wide variety of countries.
Course Content
The intensive course is divided in core modules and intermediary periods leading to 6 different specialisations that provide ample choices for you to go in-depth in your field of study.
Core period: general lectures on urban issues (October - January)
Specialisation period: (February - April)
- Managing and Financing Urban Infrastructure (MFUI)
- Urban Housing and Livelihoods (UHL)
- Urban Environmental Management and Climate Change (UECC)
- Integrated Planning and Strategies (IPS)
- Urban Land Development (ULD)
- Urban Competitiveness and Resilience (UCR)
Research & Thesis period (May - September)
Participants get engaged in group and individual exercises, are requested to write papers and essays, make presentations that are assessed throughout the course. They also prepare their research through a continuous work on research methods and techniques.
Diploma
The programme leads to the Master of Science in Urban Management and Development. The course has been accredited by the Dutch Ministry of Education as an academic Master programme. The stringent quality criteria applied by the Dutch Government are based on European standards for higher education.
Admission
In order to participate in this Master course you should:
- Have at least a Bachelor’ degree from a recognised University or similar institute.
- If you did not complete a Bachelor’s degree in English you must show certificates with relevant test results (such as TOEFL min. 575/TOEFL computer-based min. 232/ TOEFL internet based 90, IELTS min.6.5 (no IELTS subtest <5.5).
- It is an asset to have working or academic experience relevant for the area of specialisation.
