MET’s City Planning and Urban Affairs programs are led by professional faculty dedicated to the education of future leaders, practitioners, and innovators in city planning, public policy and urban development. Faculty are committed to providing an education that is accessible, flexible, global in outlook, dedicated to environmental preservation, and grounded in cutting-edge practices and field research.
The Master of City Planning (MCP) prepares students for a variety of professional urban and regional development planning roles. This degree program emphasizes a theoretical and methodological core common to the numerous specializations within the urban and regional planning field, as well as coursework geared toward several career options. The core of required courses provides training in analytical and evaluative skills, application of those skills to urban and regional public policy problems, and preparation of proposals for action.
The Master of Urban Affairs (MUA) is designed for students seeking a broad background in urban public policy, community development and service delivery, and the administration of public and private agencies in urban settings. Graduates are prepared for careers in which they assemble and analyze information for policy-making, identify community needs and resources, and administer effective service delivery programs. These tasks are common to public, private, and voluntary organizations in a wide variety of urban functions, such as housing, health services, economic development, transportation, and environment control.
The four-course Graduate Certificate in Applied Sustainability is a unique, interdisciplinary look at what it takes to make urban and economic development compatible with the natural environment.
The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Urban Affairs prepares students for further study and jobs in urban public policy, community development and service delivery, and the administration of public and private agencies in urban settings.

This fall 2015 semester, Pratt Institute is launching Urban Placemaking and Management as the first graduate program of its kind in the U.S. In the past twelve years there has been a paradigm shift in thinking about planning and urban design, from a primary focus on buildings to a focus on the spaces between buildings—“public space.” Rather than allowing these spaces to be formed as an afterthought of zoning and building design, “placemaking” sees the creation of successful public spaces as the starting point, which in turn dictates the siting and design of other components of the urban fabric. The Masters of Science (MS) in Urban Placemaking & Management (UPM) prepares professionals for this rapidly growing field.
The program is aimed at students with professionally oriented undergraduate education, professional degrees, or professional experience in architecture, engineering, environmental, landscape design, urban planning and related studies. Students gain a broad theoretical knowledge of the historical, political, and social frameworks with which to conceptualize the public realm, while developing skills to analyze urban space and its relationship to both public policy and private development. The required “core” seminars are structured around four academic knowledge streams: (1) Design and Infrastructure; (2) Economics; (3) Planning and Policy; and (4) Management. Through studios and internships, students further gain practical understanding of the planning, design and management of public space, including the integration of the principles of sustainability into public space development.
Thanks to the UPM’s participation in the Programs for Sustainable Planning & Development, students can freely take their electives in the City & Regional Planning, Sustainable Environmental Systems, Historic Preservation, and Facility Management programs, in addition to the UPM. At 40 credits (30-credits if post professional), the UPM program equips students to qualify for employment in a range of institutional, governmental, non-profit, and private sector settings. The UPM program offers flexibility to students to develop advanced knowledge and skills in three areas of focus, each corresponding to an area of employment for placemakers:

Oxford’s interdisciplinary Sustainable Urban Development Programme offers part-time professional development opportunities with the flagship MSc and newly launched DPhil.
MSc in Sustainable Urban Development
The MSc is designed for busy professionals worldwide at all stages in their career that are seeking meaningful and relevant academic training in a global context. It is taught part-time across eight intensive teaching weeks over two years, fostering independent learning and building towards a final dissertation project.
Combining industry and academic expertise the course involves a unique, cross-disciplinary collaboration between leading University of Oxford scholars and industry practitioners, and is delivered in partnership with the Prince's Foundation for Building Community and accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
DPhil (PhD) in Sustainable Urban Development
Launched in 2014, the new DPhil in Sustainable Urban Development presents opportunities to engage with cutting-edge Oxford researchers, and to follow the rapidly evolving challenges of urbanism and sustainable development to an advanced level.
This exciting new opportunity will appeal to urban leaders and decision-makers that will have gained a first rate MBA, LLM, MSc or other higher degree in a related field, that desire fresh analysis, expertise and insight to channel back into innovative practice.
Key Faculty
Dr Idalina Baptista, lecturer. Idalina’s research focuses on the theoretical and practical challenges of contemporary urban governance through transnational comparative fieldwork in Southern Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
Dr David Howard, MSc Course Director. David’s is principal research has concentrated on the contemporary urban societies of the Caribbean and Latin America, with a specific focus on urban livelihoods, social sustainability and identity politics.
Dr Johanna Waters, DPhil (PhD) Course Director. Johanna’s research interests include international and transnational population migration (particularly in the Asia-Pacific Region), international education and student mobilities.
Students
The Programme attracts professionals across sectors in architecture, business and finance, higher education, engineering, energy, environmental law, land economy and management, planning, property development, surveying and transport. Such an energetic and diverse group offers an added dimension to learning as students enrich their professional development through knowledge-sharing and networking.
Funding
The Programme currently offers a Full Fee Scholarship to an outstanding MSc candidate able to present a consistent record of both academic and professional excellence.
A range of other University and college scholarships are usually available to MSc and DPhil students across Oxford. Past students have also been awarded Oxford’s prestigious Clarendon Fund scholarship. In order to be considered for Programme funding, applications must be received by 23 January 2015.

Master’s programme in Urbanism Studies

This one-year Master’s program is aimed at urban professionals from the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and city planning who are specifically concerned with design issues of the public realm and the effects these have on social life and human behaviour. Our focus is to deepen theoretical and design knowledge, changing the mindset of professionals regarding the importance and value of the public realm in the design of our cities.
The program consists of two semesters (terms) or four periods of studio and (module) course work. The final thesis project is integrated with ongoing seminar reading series and urban film studies.
The Program will feature top Swedish Faculty and Guest Faculty from ETH Zürich, CED at UC Berkeley, UCL Bartlett in London and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.
The Master’s program in Urbanism Studies offers one competitive - nominative fellowship and three scholarship tuition waivers to support students’ academic pursuits.
