The day the Royals came - in pictures

The weather was miserable but the welcome was warm when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge called at the Royal New Zealand Police College (RNZPC) on the final official visit of their New Zealand tour.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge braved torrential rain to lay a wreath at the college's Memorial Wall.

“It was an honour for The Royal New Zealand Police College to host their Royal Highnesses on behalf of New Zealand Police,” says Superintendent John Price, National Manager Training.

“The success of the visit is a testament to the professional team at the RNZPC, the way they all pulled together to showcase New Zealand Police to the world.”

The couple laid a wreath at the Memorial Wall in memory of police officers slain on duty, chatted with staff, saw demonstrations by recruits and met police dog foster families

These are some of the hundreds of photos taken by Police photographers Gareth Davies, Rob Neil and Constable Martin Macdonald on an unforgettable day of royalty and rain. See also our video report of the visit.

It had to be Singing in the Rain - and everyone enjoyed the kapa haka group’s rendition after getting soaked at the Memorial Wall.

The search teams were taking no chances before the visit.

Foster dog Gessy was relaxed about meeting the Royal couple, despite the conditions.

The Duke and Duchess spent time with members of the No 25 HRH Prince Charles Cadet Wing, who were at the college when the Duke’s father opened it in 1981.
